Lifting the physical and emotional burden.

Well, as some of you will know who follow my blog etc, I decided to do a massive clear out.

To fill those who do not know in: My mother (LizG on DC) passed away in 2011, she was one of the main known people on the forum and her cards were amazing!
She had so much stuff it was crazy. When she passed I took most of it not wanting to part with it as it was our hobby together. I have moved twice since then and it has been a nightmare due to the craft stash!

I have sold stuff off in droves previously but have kept a hold of a lot of things just out of not wanting to let them go.

Well, this week with finally finishing college and graduating and getting a new job, I decided it was time.

So I started clearing out.

Today was a massive day for me.

Overnight I had gotten 37 orders for things to send out to people and some of the stuff that was going was very hard to let go of, but I would never have used it!

If I hadn't touched it in almost four years then when was I going too?
Her rock-a-block set, she had her name hand written on them. I hated the damn things but she used them every day and she had written her name on them in her calligraphy handwriting...that was a sentimental thing, but they were purchased, so I let them go.

Paper stock and card stock that I was sifting through, I remembered her buying it when she was with me, remembered her laugh, the way we used to joke and everything in between. Happy but equally heart breaking at the same time.

Her punches....I kept all of the Martha Stewart punches and some basics but I let over 100 punches be sold on. Some of which were her pride and joy, but why should I have just let her pride and joy sit there and get dusty?

Her embellishment folders. Those square papermania ones with trays in them. She had 15 of them.
I looked through them, having never used anything that was in them, and decided to keep the purple folders and some of the things...that amounted to 2 folders filled.
Why should it all just be sitting there getting dusty instead of going to happy crafters to put on little girls sparkly birthday cards?

Card blanks...why on earth would someone need over 2000 card blanks of a low quality? It baffles me, but never-the-less, she had them and somehow they did not seem as though they were mine.

There were some things that categorically were never going to be sold;

The Slice machine,
The Cuttlebug,
The pro and aqua markers,
The containers of spellbinders and provocraft folders,
The ink pads,
The 20 ringbinders of stamps,
The Glittergirls boards,
All of the things i had bought since her passing to add to the masses of stuff.

All in, I have sold £500 worth of stash. Cheaply, insanely cheaply, all in all it was worth about  double that second hand, but it is all now in a home that will look after it, use it, laugh while playing with it and it will even make some of the women smile on down days when they are feeling low and they decide to make a card.

I was divided about the flowersoft stuff. It was spread over two containers and I had said to two women who came to my house today to buy loads of things, that they could get a price for that too, luckily the woman said she didn't know anything about it so would leave it.

After they left with their haul, I looked at how much I had sold off in under 48 hours. It was remarkable. Panic set in.

Why was I doing this? Would Mum be mad at me? How would I feel tomorrow?

Well after about five minutes the tears set in. It was fear. Suddenly, the prized belongings of my mothers were in the hands of strangers and not together as a united group of things.

I started packing the Flowersoft stuff away and decided to look through it properly and I am so glad that I did.

As if the emotional ordeal of getting rid of some of this stuff was not enough, I come across a printed out poem my mother had written to her mother who had passed when she was ten. It was dated March 2004, I was 19 and had just left home and our relationship was rocky to say at least!

It spoke of a mother's love being unconditional and everlasting, how she missed her Mum everyday but then at the end, I broke.

"My daughter is loving....."

She was talking about me, probably sitting up late at night at the computer after surfing the DC forums and wrote this from her heart when we were not in contact and not talking to each other...

I just sobbed.

So, this evening, I sit here with my box of tissues for the tears that have refused to fall for four years since her passing, which are now overflowing.

I feel happy, sad, thankful, grateful, mournful, nostalgic and like finally, the cracks are not being paved over, but dug out and fixed!

I had spent so long clinging onto every little thing I had of hers related to crafting that I didn't realise it was suffocating me.
It surrounded me in this little blanket of security almost like she was still here, it wouldn't let me grieve.

Crafting will always be a part of my life, I will always keep a lot of it, but letting go of just over one third of it to make it more manageable physically has surprisingly lifted the emotional burden I have been unable to shift for years.

I am sure Mum will be up there smiling (but slightly annoyed that I sold and gave away some hand made embellishments of hers) knowing that my home is less cluttered....physically and emotionally!

I think I can finally call it MY craft stash.

Lots of layers!

Hi all,

After yesterdays two cards, I felt that I could do better, so I took some inspiration from fellow DC members and went for it.

I had saw people distressing the edges of their paper and it just seemed to give a more authentic feel. Most were using the Tim Holtz paper distresser, but I decided to try with scissors!

The overall card.
Decoupage image topper accented with antique velvet distress inks.
Paper edges distressed with household scissors.
Purple circle sprayed with cosmic shimmer spray.
Little flowers punched and hand made by my mother. <3

I have hundreds of these cute embellishments but never use them!!

Among the boxes of embellishments were a little jar of these paper shimmery raised dots. I have no idea where they came from, I think Mum got them in a wallet swap!

White flowers punched and hand made by my mother.

Cosmic shimmer circle, just adds a little more colour and splash to the card!

Well, I hope you like the card, I am very happy with it! This is more like the kind of card I should be making if I just put the time into it!
Well, how ese will I use all of my papers up? :D

First Christmas Card since 2010!! - Feedback welcome!

Hey all!

OK, so I got my craft on today as I posted earlier, and here are the results!

Getting all of the stuff out I needed may have created a bit of a crafty mess....
Oops!

 All of the bits waiting to be put together!

I did not have any blue glitter card, so I made my own!

The assembled card, glitter and all!

Foiled snowflake card as backing layered with foiled cream snowflake paper stock.
Side border white paper is textured with flock.
Punches used: Martha stewart gingerbread man boarder punch, xcut snowflake punch. Image stamped is forever friends independent stamp (not in a set), coloured with promarkers on white card stock, then backed with white card which was glittered by myself.
Image and backing cut out and embossed with Nestabilities Labels Two and Cuttlebug. Sentiment is cut out card topped with letter and boarder peel-offs.

So there we have it!

My first card since making them with Mum.

I think she will have been watching over me having a giggle at the mess I was making.

Stamp Sorting: Take One!

Well, those of you who have been following me know that I have been sorting out my Mums craft stash into mine...and what a job it was!

For those of you who didn't get the update...I will put pics on here later!

Well, she had 27 folders full of stamps, plus there are my stamps plus the additional BOX of stamps which are new still in packaging!

I am taking it upon myself to organise them today!

They are totally mixed up!!

Here are SOME of the folders....

Wish me luck...

A card with brayering....take one!

Well, today I decided to get the brayer out and to attempt  the cards that Mum used to make. She did teach me how to do some of it once, but I have not picked it up since and could not remember much of it.

First attempt was the basic task of making a sky and water background on silk card.

The brayer Mum used!
I now have loads of these, I chose "Waterfall" as I am creating a water and sky background!
One mask and some crinkled paper later.....
One background!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK, so once I had figured this out I decided to make a replica of one of Mums cards in her DoCrafts gallery...
Here is hers...
So...I got the stuff out and here we go!!
Image stamped with Momento Ink pad onto silk card.
Image Dippy toe stamp from clarity...not sure if that is it's real name but Mum always called it that!
I used this 3/4" stamp (now I know why she had it) to punch out a moon mask from a post it note! Make sure some of the sticky bit is on it.
Mask off the moon and the waterline to colour the sky.
Ink up the brayer as usual and then roll the excess off onto scrap paper and then fade at the edge of the brayer in the usual way :)
One coloured sky!
Mask off the sky to colour the water.
Ink up the brayer and take of the excess onto a crumpled piece of paper. Voilà  The ripples are transferred to the brayer!
Both areas are coloured and the water has a ripple effect.
Remove the moon mask to reveal the stamp below.
Trim to size.
Backing papers and peel offs.
scoring the backing card from A4.
Main image layered onto two pieces of card.
Corner peel offs added in three parts each.
Main lines added around edges of the backing card and then around the edges of the image and layers.
I added some ceramic roses to compliment the design as Mum did with silk roses.
Roses mounted with syllicone glue.
Peel off design.
Main image mounted.
Mimi storage!
So,
I decided to use my Mums little mimi tote for my essential tools and stickies for when I am making any card :D
Who would have known that you would need so many little things!!
I also put in mini tubs of little embellishments that I seem to use on all cards, gems and such :)
I have my scissors, sticky pads, glues, rollers, pens, picky tools, embellishments, and even some glitter in there!
Mum was using it for something similar I think judging by what was in it, but alas, she was disorganised!
Job well done I think!!! :D
Oh - and flowersoft tubs once empty are amazing for glitter and gems!
Idiot's Guide....
Well, I was making my first card the other day for the first time in almost two years and lo and behold, I open Mum's box she kept her cuttlebug in to cut out my stamped image with nestabilities....
What did I find?
An idiots guide to which plates to use and in which order for all the different kinds of folders and dye cuts.
She had a mix of spellbinders, cuttlebug, sizzix and loads of other kinds of stuff! I would have been clueless otherwise!!
I was grateful and through the tears caused by a mix of sadness and amusement, I managed to get it all done!
Cuttlebuggy goodness - OH MY!
Box upon box of cuttlebug, sizzix and spellbinders folders and templates!
All of these were Mum's and she obviously decided on storing them in an interesting way!
She actually managed to organise something AND save space!! If you knew my mother, you would realise that this is as amazing as the first person to slice bread  :P
I do not even want to count how much stuff there is here or the cost! I think Dad might keel over if he knew!
She stored the embossing folders and dye cuts in CD cases with the magnetic wallets from asda for pictures to put on the fridge!!
Amazing idea!
CD case with embossing folders on right and brass templates on left!
Brilliant way to store all the spellbinders stuff!
Cuttlebug embossing folders
Nesties! All stored on magnetic plates! You never loose them!
Embossing folders galore!
Impressibilities, nestibilities and shapeabilities on the left, embossing folders on the right with some cuttlebug dye cuts!
Three boxes of stuff for the cuttlebug!!
